ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Women as a class are targets of violence including rape, sexual abuse, battering, stalking, sexual harassment, and genital mutilation. When women are victims, we are all too often discredited and devalued. NOW-New York State is committed to assuring the full safety and protection of all citizens and non-citizen residents within the state.

NOW-New York State Supports:

New York Model for Batterer Programs
Removal of the statute of limitations for survivors of incest, child sexual abuse or child abuse.
Surcharge on orders of protection to be paid by defendant with the funds to be used to enhance domestic violence services.
Development of a fatality review board to examine the deaths of battered women to determine what could be done to save lives.
Change in parole regulations to early parole where having been repeatedly abused or battered was a direct causal factor in the commission of a crime.
Legislation to allow issuance of orders of protection to unrelated household members.
Legislation that defines the crime of stalking and establishes strong penalties.
Changing the definition of serious physical injury to lower the threshold required for felony assault.
Funding for community outreach and education for prevention of female genital mutilation.
